Saturday 3rd June saw 10 volunteers from the ‘ad hoc WhatsApp group’ gather at 8.30 am to undertake probably one of the moist important horticultural tasks of our project – the spreading of mulch to the planting areas.
Mulching the beds is important for three main reasons;
1- Significantly reduces water loss from the soil, better for the plants, the environment and our time !.
2- Significantly reduces weed growth again better for the plants and our time !!.
3- Significantly improves the visual impact of the areas and will highlight the individual plants.
All the beds were watered prior to spreading the much about 50-80mm thick.
In total we used 2m³ of mulch (about 3 builder’s dumpy bags)
The Oak tree bed has not been mulched because of its location and raised position.
In addition to mulching we also carried out the following;
Installation of one further large Oak bench and three child sized benches.
Trimming of the holly balls along the verge bed.
Trimming the box balls under the Oak tree.
Planting of several Verbena kindly donated by one of the volunteers.
Grass areas cut, including verge margins at the Bowles entrance.
