Section Logo2023 Location - Poltimore bowls (Broadclyst end)

Location image

The bowls are historic 17th granite gate piers positioned at the Broadclyst road junction. As they are located at main road entrance to the village we would like highlight their and Poltimore's historic importance.

Unfortunately, one of the piers has been significantly damaged by a vehicle and is currently subject to legal process which precludes any work for the time being.

Proposals for the other pier situated in the large grass verge include

  • Increase native planting at the rear of by relocation of adjacent saplings
  • Plant screening shrubs behind the Poltimore name plinth
  • Plant the front and sides with a mix of seasonal bedding and perennials / herbaceous stock
  • Install ground level solar uprights to the name plinth
  • Plant bulbs in surrounding verge
  • Create a wildflower strip next to the native planting

The area designated for shrub planting in front of the plinth was dug over during which some 80 daffodil bulbs were carefully relocated ‘in the green’ to the adjacent wild seed area. They will continue to grow and flower again next season.

The area was subsequently planted with a mix of shrubs, grasses and herbaceous stock.

The areas for shrub and seasonal planting, wild flower and native trees have been marked out and initial preparation works undertaken.

Planting of the native area was completed after the volunteer’s carefully relocated approximately 50 small tree saplings from the adjacent small woodland. This will form a backdrop to the Bowls and our display planting.

This activity was a real example of why we are doing Bloom as few of the volunteers had had the previous opportunity to plant trees and there was a real sense of pride and achievement on completion.
