Section Logo2023 Location - Church Yard – Unconsecgrated area

Location image

At the rear of St Marys church there is an enclosed meadow grass area with some seating that has the potential for several uses whilst overlooking the views of the surrounding countryside.

This could include increasing privacy to allow areas for quiet contemplation, Wildlife friendly places and to make the whole area more conducive for small village events such as the dog show that was held here during the Queens platinum jubilee weekend.

Ideas for consideration are

  • Planting of hedges along existing iron fence
  • Improving bases to seating
  • Review the position of recently planted trees
  • Creation of wildflower areas – bird boxes and other wildlife ‘retreats’.
  • Location of tree seed nursery
  • More frequently mown grass area
  • Plant entrance and sides with a mix of seasonal bedding and perennials / herbaceous stock

The formal areas that were cultivated last week were levelled and lightly raked.

This is our most intricately designed planting area so careful and considered setting out was required particularly to form the box hedging feature Inspired by the Poltimore Tiara.

Planting of 90 herbs, shrubs, grasses and herbaceous stock completed.

The upper grass area received its first cut of the year and a ‘path’ was cut around the lower area which we will not be cutting until much later in the summer to provide a valuable meadow habitat.

The areas for planting were dug over and edged ready for planting. 5 Oak log stepping stones installed in the gate entrance to alleviate wear to grass. During digging over the group uncovered a long marble stone. This was cleaned off and fitted in the gateway to provide an edge to the adjacent macadam notwithstanding it being a feature in its own right. Associated ground cover planting will now be added in this area.

The areas for shrub and seasonal planting and wild flowers have been marked out and initial preparation works undertaken.

The two end birch trees previously planted to extend the adjacent tree avenue are struggling to grow due to the influence of their much larger tree neighbours. This has resulting in them forming a uneven and leaning habit which will require action some time in the future.

We have therefore coppiced them in the anticipation they will sprout into new multi stemmed trees much better suited to the location.

The trunk and branches removed in this operation were not wasted and Hibernacula was built in the quieter lower part of the garden.

This involved digging a small ‘scrape’ in the grass, placing the larger logs at the bottom building up and topping with a layer of leaves and soil. We’re sure this will be a perfect slow worm mansion!
